Methley Royals, based at the Royal Oak on the outskirts of the Castleford village, were formed in summer 2007 when coach Tony Handforth, the former Wakefield Trinity boss, and a couple of dozen players started training on Pinfold Lane.
Handforth, who coached the now defunct Methley Monarchs and, in the 1980s, the old Methley side, enlisted Danny Burton as his assistant, while early helpers included Dave Watson and Darren Bell
The Royals hit immediate problems, after joining the Castleford and Featherstone ARL and the CMS Yorkshire League, when Castleford Rugby Union club objected to the use of Pinfold Lane for training or playing.
But the players, despite that blow and the departure of Burton to Pennine League giants Sharlston Rovers, held firm and brushed aside the uncertainty by fulfilling their first fixture, the Unison Division Four game at Swillington on Saturday September 1 2007.
Neighbours Castleford Panthers helped by allowing use of their facilities for the inaugural home match with Walton and, since then, Methley have established a permanent playing base at hospitable Smawthorne Panthers Willowbridge base.
Two local companies, Clayton Holmes Nesbitt Wealth Management and Coney Moor Motors, have stepped forward with kit sponsorship while captain Simon Dickinson, a plumbing and heating engineer, and assistant coach Terry Crosthwaite, a joiner specialising in house renovation, have injected substantial cash sums.
The side, bidding for promotion from Division Four, has already made the headlines by beating Division One side Kinsley and Division Two outfit Oulton in the Halbro Yorkshire Cup, missing out on a place in the quarter finals by slipping honourably at Dewsbury Moor, of Division One.
